The Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Pilicode, is one of the prominent research wings of Kerala Agricultural University located in Pilicode village, Kasaragod district. Established in 1972 and situated around 15 m above sea level near NH 66, RARS covers approximately 57.87 ha and receives around 3,379 mm of annual rainfall, with mean temperatures ranging from 23 °C to 33 °C . It serves as a critical hub for research on mandatory crops such as coconut, rice, cashew, banana, mango, vegetables and pulses. In the early years, the station focused on introducing and evaluating diverse coconut cultivars—including foreign and locally adapted varieties. Later, it expanded its scope under the National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) to include hybrid development, germplasm conservation and testing of coastal saline‑resilient rice varieties suited to Kerala’s unique ecosystems .
Beyond research, RARS Pilicode plays a vital role in technology transfer, farm management, training and extension. The station operates organic input production units distributing beneficial microbes like Trichoderma and Pseudomonas to farmers since 2021 . The instructional farm and associated exhibits—including coconut groves, a rose garden, mango orchard, livestock units and hybrid seedling nurseries—span around 30 acres and are prominently displayed during farm shows, trainings, and guided tours . The station also conserves livestock biodiversity, notably Kasaragod dwarf cattle and Malabari goats, offering veterinary services and artificial insemination support to farmers .
